• Off the African coast, a new tool in the fight against climate change: drones

    Nine thousand miles away from Trump Tower and Hillary Clinton's email server, Aboud Jumbe watched the 2016 presidential election closely. As policy director for Zanzibar's Ministry of Lands, Water, Energy and Environment, Jumbe's day-to-day concerns include rising and warming waters, an existential threat to this island nation, given its precarious geographic location and below sea-level terrain.

    Jumbe had breathed easy under President Barack Obama. The United States had finally established itself as a leader in the fight against climate change. But as he watched Donald Trump's rise with a sense of dread, glued to the television set much like the rest of the world, that relief was quickly upended. Once becoming president, Mr. Trump staffed his administration with climate change skeptics and quickly pulled the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement.

    "For the first time, I could see the U.S. railing against the world and to me, it was a really sad, sad affair," Jumbe recalled last month, sitting in his dimly lit wood-paneled office on the outskirts of Stone Town, the main port city of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous series of islands off the coast of Tanzania in east Africa.

    Frustrations on the island run deeper than with Mr. Trump's sudden repudiation of the Paris accord. Government officials and residents alike bristle at the fact the developed world is responsible for climate change, while developing nations bear the brunt of the effects. The threat of climate change and rising sea levels are very real to small, developing islands, which often lack the resources and capacity to adapt.

    Small governments that rely on international financing to climate-proof their countries are turning to more creative solutions. In Zanzibar, they're turning to drones.

    The Zanzibar Mapping Initiative is the world's most ambitious mapping project deploying small-scale drones. The project was born out of a partnership with the World Bank and the Zanzibar Commission for Lands and the State University of Zanzibar, modeled after a drone mapping and digitization project called Dar Ramani Huria, a Swahili phrase that translates to "The Open Map of Dar es Salaam."

    In August 2016, armed with $20,000-lightweight yellow and black senseFly eBee drones, a team of 17 geospatial technology students from the State University set out to fly drones over every single village on Unguja, Zanzibar's larger island.

    The group of millennials spent nearly a year scattered across the 53-mile long stretch of soil and sand, programming drone flights to capture aerial images and topography of every square inch of land. Hundreds of these images are now being pieced together to create a high-resolution base map of Zanzibar. And the geospatial data collected by the drone during flight will be published online and available to the public by November, with the hope of revolutionizing the policy-making capabilities of the Zanzibari government.

    Mapping and land management remains a frustrating and expensive problem across the African continent. A mere 2.9 percent of Africa is mapped at a local scale, compared to 87 percent of Europe, according to a 2007 report from the United Nations. As the population swells -- Tanzania's national average population growth rate is one of the fastest in the world -- a lack of up-to-date maps makes for messy land disputes and hamfisted attempts at urban planning.

    After the Zanzibar Revolution in 1964,  a new semi-autonomous democratic government nationalized the economy and redistributed land to the landless for free. The government handed out leases lasting up to 99 years, sometimes with a verbal agreement and often without proper planning. Houses started popping up in the middle of roadways, and entire villages materialized in flood zones.

    As the lush urban-island of 1.3 million people confronts the creeping threat of climate change and an uptick in natural disasters, high resolution aerial photography and a modern spatial data infrastructure can not only facilitate urban planning but assist government officials in climate-proofing the island. Consumer-facing maps like those developed by Google and Apple lack the kind of granular resolution and detailed data that local officials need. Small-budget governments like Zanzibar have for years reverted to old-school mapping techniques, surveying land by hand with a measuring tape.

    Disaster risk management is an urgent task in Zanzibar, where much of the economy depends on the tropical climate and marine and terrestrial ecosystems.  Fisheries, seaweed farming and tourism make up at least 30 percent of Zanzibar's GDP, and agriculture contributes to about a quarter of the economy.

    "If you look at the tourism sector, if you look at the rain farm system and if you look at the fisheries, it is all a climate-dependent system," Jumbe, the policy director, said. "So if you alter that – either naturally or unnaturally -- the people's systems collapse. And so for us, we have to monitor."

    This means the government has a vital interest in monitoring changes in coastlines, vegetation growth, saltwater intrusion, coral bleaching and sea levels.

    "It would be wonderful if the drone images could show us the extent of the degradation of seagrass or coral reef patches," Narriman Jiddawi, a senior lecturer at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Stone Town, said of her plans to utilize the drone maps. Seagrass, dense underwater meadows crucial to surrounding habitations in shallow ocean water, is one of many plant species on the decline around the Zanzibar coast due to "changes in salinity and temperature, ocean acidification, storm activity and ultraviolet irradiance," according to 2012 report.

    Sea surface temperatures over the past 20 years have trended upward on Unguja island, the largest island in the Zanzibar archipelago. Predictions from Climate Systems Analysis Group, a climate research group at the University of Cape Town, project a 2 degree celsius increase in temperature by 2050. Even modest changes to the temperatures of Zanzibar's shallow water could wreak havoc on the seaweed farming industry. Data show increases in wind speeds, wave heights and high ocean levels, all of which contribute to erosion of coastlines.

    "When I see our mangroves suffocating under the rising sea level, when I see our reef habitats disappear, when I look around at my favorite beach spots in Zanzibar, that I used to remember with serenity, I look at them now and feel a desperate sense of despair," Jumbe said.

    Fishermen who have seen their livelihoods swallowed up over the course of their lifetimes know firsthand the dangers of rising sea levels and warming ocean temperatures on Kilimani Bay, a barren stretch of white sand and calm ocean where the land has been seemingly carved out of the southwestern peninsula of the island with an ice cream scooper.  

    Juma Khamisi, a weathered kofia cap-wearing fisherman who has worked from the same spot for decades, has been forced to venture further and further from shore, in deeper and colder waters, in search of his haul. The 53-year-old says that a dyke once protected a shallow freshwater swamp right off the shore, allowing his fellow fishermen to grow rice and vegetables. The dyke has been compromised in recent years by the encroaching sea. Crops grow no more.  

    "You can see that there has been a lot of soil erosion," Khamisi said through a translator, standing barefoot in the sinking sand, his handcarved wooden boat parked a few feet away. "Not sure why there is water encroaching the land but what I know is that water levels are increasing."

    Half of Zanzibar lives below the poverty line, making the crop-killing effects of climate change that much more devastating. For fishermen like Khamisi, who farm in their backyards and live on roughly $1 dollar a day, it's the difference between feeding a family or going hungry.

    Traveling around the island, nearly everyone had at least a tangential connection to the Zanzibar Mapping Initiative. But Mohammed Juma, the director of urban and rural planning, takes credit for spearheading the project.

    His office in Stone Town is littered with vintage maps and coffee-table art books. Wearing tight-fitting maroon pants and a houndstooth jacket, Juma does not look the part of a typical Zanzibari government official.Juma said he began to pay attention to drone work three years ago, when he attended a workshop in Dar es Salaam about an open data initiative in Tanzania funded by the World Bank.

    "I was fascinated, because one of the issues we are suffering from here is lack of information — especially for me," he said. "I plan. So if I want to go and plan somewhere, I don't have the information."

    The map of the archipelago used by the government of Zanzibar has not been updated since 2004. That map wasn't digitized for five years, meaning it was already out of date by the time it was finally released in 2009.

    "It was near impossible," Juma said of his predecessors' ability to do their jobs.

    After the workshop in Dar es Salaam, Juma pulled aside Edward Anderson, a senior disaster risk management specialist for the World Bank based out of Tanzania, who coordinated a previous mapping project. Anderson had been pestering the World Bank to start utilizing drones for various purposes for years.

    "Until now, if the government really wanted help to update it's base map, you'd need aero-imagery, you'd hire a company," Anderson told me(check). "It would cost $200,000 just to move the plane from Kenya to Zanzibar."

    "What the drones do is significantly reduce of cost and complexity," Anderson added.

    Word of the drones spread quickly as they quietly soared over Zanzibar's settlements. In the village of Sebleni, a family said a torrential flood forced them to evacuate their home at 3 a.m. last spring, displacing them until the water finally evaporated in June. They hoped the data collected by the drones would help the government mitigate the devastation of natural disasters.

    Zanzibar's unofficial landfill is an old quarry pit that's now a hazardous crude dump site surrounded by homes. Hamadi Juma, the head of Zanzibar's Urban Services Project, planned to use the drone imagery to establish the borders of the dump site, resettle the families living around the pit and transition it into Zanzibar's first and only official landfill.

    "It is in an unsustainable position of being a world class tourist destination without having a sanitary landfill or sludge treatment facility," read a financing proposal Juma shared.

    All over Zanzibar, high-resolution maps are expected to help planners accomplish tasks that come easy to city planners in the West. The images will allow planners to plot street lamps along village roads or initiate the collection of property taxes, which have not been collected on the island since 1964. They can help adjudicate land conflicts, and implement more sophisticated urban development for an island with a booming population.

    Two members of the Zanzibar Mapping Initiative, Khadija Abdulla Ali and Mohammed Seif Kassim, her former classmate at the State University of Zanzibar, have mapped the school's campus several times over the past year. The imagery showed that informal housing surrounding the university in Tunguu, right outside of Stone Town, had nearly tripled in the previous 12 months.

    "We are 1.3 million on this tiny island, what if all of us have houses – what is the future of this island?" Abdallah Hama Bakar, a disaster risk management specialist working on the project at the State University, told me. "Our city will grow horizontally – so we have to do this planning. Otherwise after 20 years, our island will be little more than a settlement."

    "In Zanzibar, the drone become famous," Kassim said in imperfect English as he waited for Ali to identify the best position to launch the drone. We had traveled to a fenced-off clearing of land in the middle of the village of Nungwi one afternoon in early August to take the winged robot for a test drive.

    Kassim pulled out a laptop computer, placed it on the hood of our SUV and began to program the flight path of the drone. With the tiny aircraft in hand, Ali stood still in the center of the pitch, and cocked her head to the sky to test the wind against her face. Soon prepared for launch, she broke into a quick sprint, her orange-bedazzled hijab billowing behind her. She released the drone into flight, cutting the figure of a modern Zanzibari superwoman – cape and all, flapping against the overcast horizon.

    The drone, buzzing overhead at an altitude of around 600 feet, would be able to capture aerial photos with such precision that you'd be able to witness the near-naked kite surfers gleefully skimming past the hijab-wearing seaweed farmers who labor on Nungwi's shallow crystalline shore.

    Nungwi is a pricey tourist destination on the northernmost tip of the island, where rooms at hotels go for $400 a night and tourists can enjoy beachside couples massages.

    But the lavish accommodations here are surrounded on all sides by impoverished villages that share a single spout of fresh water. At the turn onto a rutted dirt road into Nungwi, a large sign displays hand-drawn renderings of a man and a woman in skimpy swimsuits, with two big red crosses etched over their bodies. "Please respect local & traditional culture," the sign reads, a timeworn request that is often ignored by vacationers.

    Much like the lucrative tourism business in Nungwi, the drones buzzing overhead have also become a source of suspicion among locals. As two of the island's drone evangelists working to demystify the flying object and their mission, Kassim and Ali had collected a trove of war stories.

    "In some areas, they fear the drone," Ali said. "They think it's a bomb when it crashes. Or they say, we don't want you to fly drone because you will know our secrets. So you can't."

    She recalled a particularly frightening day in the field when her drone crashed, and confused villagers rushed to collect the scattered pieces. They refused to hand over the machine over unless paid the money they demanded. Ali went back to the area the next day with government security guards to finish mapping the area.

    But she treasured most of her experiences explaining the power and purpose of the drone to fellow Zanzibaris. It reinforced the new kind of professional autonomy the program and drone certification had granted her, freeing her from the seaweed farms.

    "Most of the men feel like I'm a man, because I'm strong and smart and in our culture, most women are not," Ali said, fidgeting with her hands, still covered in henna from her wedding. She married at the end of July in a traditional Islamic wedding. "In our culture, men have to give you permission to do things. But I choose someone who gives me permission to do everything. Someone who listens and makes you proud of what you do. Women automatically think we can't. But for me, everything is a possibility."

    The marginalization of women on Zanzibar -- which is culturally conservative but also embraces Western modernity -- is subtle at first glance. But Ali's gentle fearlessness and prominence around the island is a paradox in a place where a women's rights activist was quietly murdered with a machete.

    "Khadija is one of those very few women in Zanzibar who are really up for a change – for an evolution, of the way people perceive things and I think we need to help her, support her," said Aboud Jumbe.

    The drone project has enabled women like Ali and her female counterparts to challenge prevailing stereotypes of the role of women on the majority Muslim island, a small stride towards closing a gender gap in economic opportunity. Women account for almost three quarters of the agricultural workforce.  

    "There are so many factors, including low level of education compared with men, and it is embedded with early marriage, school drop out, the mismatch of education they have with labor market needs -- those are the challenges that make the disparities,"said Mwanaidi M. Ali, the female director of the Zanzibar's Youth Development Department of high female unemployment numbers.

    "Cultural barriers? No. I am here and I'm the director," she added.

    The numbers tell a slightly different story: Women account for over half of the labor force in Tanzania but compared to men, women only constitute as 32 percent of the paid workforce in industries outside of agriculture, according to a study conducted by Tanzania's Commission for Science and Technology. In urban areas, female unemployment stands at 22.9 percent, compared to their male counterparts at 6 percent. And for young women specifically, the unemployment rate stands at 13.2 percent, according to the Zanzibar Employment Service.

    The elevation of female drone pilots, who complained of the Mapping Initiative's spotty and third-rate payroll, hasn't necessarily translated to sustainable careers.

    When Ali, Khairaat Ali Khamis and Asha Khamis Mussa joined the team, their participation was a part of their geo-spatial studies, coupled with a $4 stipend, barely enough money to cover travel allowances and buy bottled water to keep hydrated while working long hours under the blistering island sun. Eventually, after what the World Bank called an internship period, some participants were hired for higher wages. Ali, Khamis and Mussa all say that they were not paid consistently for their work. The three women say that Yves Barthelemy, a contractor for the World Bank who managed the team, oftentimes failed to pay them altogether.

    "I don't know what the exact word but it was like – he wasn't doing what he was supposed to do sometimes. Because people work and you have to pay them – on time," Khamis said.

    Sitting in her older brother's government office at the Fisheries Department on a Saturday morning in August where she was programming his computer, Mussa spoke pridefully of her role as drone pilot, but was mindful of the disapproval from men in her community -- "they give me different kind of name because of what I'm doing and because of how busy I am." Wounded not by their comments, but by the missing compensation and too uncomfortable to speak up for herself -- "you would not feel comfortable either," she told me -- Mussa eventually quit.

    "It hurts me to remember that I was the only one who did not get paid for the last mission," she said. She could no longer spend her time doing a job for which she was not being paid.

    Barthelemy disputes Mussa's account and says that she was paid a total of 450 Tanzanian Shilling for a total of 45 days of work. If there was an error, it could be remediated, Barthelemy wrote in an email, but conceded that delays in paying the students were common.

    "There were delays in paying Yves who was coordinating this and hence delays in paying the students such that indeed, there was a period when they were mapping unpaid, but this should have been reimbursed retroactively," Anderson wrote in an email.

    Shortly after being made aware of the payment issue with Mussa, the World Bank said it had been resolved.

    "No doubt that the days were long, tiring and sometimes frustrating when drones crashed or did not work, then charging batteries at home, then starting early in the morning... and that as a consequence some of the students thought 10.000 [Tanzanian Shilling] was not worth it," Barthelemy added in an email.

    "A lot of this was part of their classwork so the payment wasn't a commercial rate which is why we were able to get the costs down but a number of them were able to get commercial jobs," explained Frederick Mbuya, a consultant for the World Bank working with Tanzania's Commission for Science and Technology.  

    "They are now operating jobs commercially and being paid commercial rates," he added.

    While this was true for Ali, who completed a paid assignment to map a gold mine in Mwanza at the end of the summer, Khamis left the team to become a teacher and Mussa quit.

    Many people on the island are concerned that the data from the mapping initiative won't be as widely accessible as the World Bank has promised, due to a mix of government incompetence and bureaucratic paralysis.

    "This government has a strongly Soviet bureaucracy -- a very Soviet past -- and is set up with a central command control structure," Anderson, the World Bank official, said in his office in Dar es Salaam. A 2015 law made it illegal for any publication or organization to call data "official" unless it has been approved by Tanzania's National Bureau of Statistics.

    "When we talk about drone mapping, it's being done by surveyors of the government, so it's a mandate -- we're not worried about the drone data being somehow illegal," Anderson said.

    Anderson says that Zanzibar's agreement with the World Bank stipulates that 7 centimeter-per-pixel resolution of the national map will be made public, but that the Bank hasn't yet sold the notion that data is a public good to be repurposed by the entire government.  

    "If we remove that platform and go back to working in silos, then we risk ending up in disappointment," Jumbe says of the open source push.

    That's why people like Lorna Slade, the Executive Director of Mwambao Coastal Community Network, are hiring drone experts of their own. Slade, who works with local communities around Unguja to manage their fisheries and local natural resources, hired Yussuf Said Yussuf to map her non-profit's octopus recovery program. Yussuf managed the Zanzibar Mapping Initiative and now serves as Tanzania Flying Labs coordinator for We Robotics, a business incubator for drone services.

    Octopus hunting is a booming market for Zanzibari fishermen,especially around the holiday of Ramadan. But a mature female octopus needs 30 days undisturbed in a coral reef to breed and hatch their eggs. So Slade's team identifies areas to close off from the fishing community for two to three months to facilitate breeding, a task completed more intelligently and efficiently with aerial imagery, as opposed to village opinion or diving expeditions. Slade hopes to eventually utilize underwater drones to monitor octopus nesting and aquaculture.

    Unlike in the United States, where the drone market has been somewhat stymied by restrictive and onerous regulations, the creative use of drones to solve basic problems in developing countries like Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi, and Uganda has flourished.

    Frederick Mbuya is a World Bank consultant and a drone visionary who founded the "drone as a service" company Uhurulabs. He's one of the most prominent proponents of the drone revolution in Africa and has his hands in some of Tanzania's most transformative projects.

    Nestled in his oasis of his home office in Dar es Salaam, surrounded by drone parts, computers, and vintage mini planes, the gesticular Mbuya rattles off the many ways he's using drones: aerial surveys for land mapping, analysis of agricultural data to improve farm management, oil and gas pipeline inspections, and medical supply delivery.

    In 2018, the only drone delivery service in the world called Zipline, a California company which is already up and flying in Rwanda, Zipline, will be expanding into Tanzania. Distribution centers throughout the country will charter fleets of drones to deliver vital medical supplies to difficult to access areas to make up for the Tanzanian government's shortcomings.

    Mbuya is currently working on literature to help other commercial drone companies navigate the process of registering and licensing drones for commercial work in Tanzania -- what he hopes to be an example for the rest of the region wrestling with regulating technology developing at a faster pace than the government can legislate.

    "There is nothing more powerful than a young innovator in Africa building something themselves and it flying," Mbuya said.

    "I think the Zanzibar project is a bold statement to the rest of the world and to the rest of Africa: look, we have the largest ever mapping project using small scale drones," Mbuya says. "That is something that Zanzibaris should be extremely proud of and African countries should be inspired by. They don't have to lean on foreigners coming in to do the high tech work."

    We've now been playing with the two new Mavics for a couple of days. Not enough for an exhaustive review, but more than enough to give you our first thoughts. Here they are:
    Mavic 2 Zoom: frontal sensors
    The Bad

    Let's get these out of the way. The Mavic 2 no longer fits in its box with all four propellers on. You've got to pull the bottom two off. That's a pain. Of course, you'll probably throw it in a camera bag or something instead, where it'll fit just fine.

    Furthermore, the controller now has removable screw-in thumbsticks, which must also be removed to fit it in the supplied box. So far, I have almost a 100 percent strike rate of setting up the drone and taking off without remembering to screw those stupid things on, and I find it really annoying.

    These are minor issues, and won't stop the Mavic 2 series being incredibly quick and convenient to launch once you've got something better to carry them around in.

    In terms of the cameras, we found the buttons are a little hit and miss. Holding the camera button down to take a photo sometimes does the job, other times it seems to get lost in the task of auto-focusing and forgets to shoot. This didn't seem to happen when using the on-screen buttons.
    The Good

    The Mavic 2 drones feel like a well-thought-out upgrade to the original original Mavics in a lot of little ways. New prop designs make them quieter. They're more stable in the wind, and the control system seems to allow for smoother flight, even at speed. In short, they're much more of a pleasure to fly than the OG Mavic.

    There's also a few other nifty things, like the new gimbal locks, which are easier to put on than the old jiggers, and which hold and protect the cameras really nicely. And 8 gigabytes of internal memory just in case you forget your MicroSD card. And a controller that slow-charges your phone, so you don't burn your phone battery filming. Nice!
    Mavic 2 Pro: new gimbal guards are terrific and easier to use

    I was stoked to discover the new Mavics had 360-degree obstacle avoidance built in – 9 out of 10 times I crash or nearly crash drones it's because I'm going for a sideways-moving parallax shot and clip a tree I can't see on my screen. But it turns out the sideways obstacle sensors are only active in certain modes, particularly automated flight modes, and they won't solve my problems at all yet.

    Feature-wise, there's some nice surprises too. When landing in low light, the Mavic 2 drones deploy downlighting to make sure their automated landing systems can do the job. And the controller range has been boosted to a terrifying 8 kilometers (5 mi) with 1080p footage streaming back to the controller. That's an absolutely absurd distance. I once flew a Phantom 3 out to 5 km, in the barren plains of Mongolia, and that was quite far enough to have my several thousand dollar aerial gadget dangling in the air out of my sight.

    The Mavic 2 Zoom instantly becomes the first compact consumer drone to pack an optical zoom lens. I've been waiting for something like this for years. Why? Well, wide angle lenses might cram a whole lot into a shot, but they're terrible for giving things a feeling of size and substance.

    The Zoom's camera goes from 24 mm to 48 mm. It doesn't sound like a lot, but it makes a huge difference when you're shooting or filming. When zoomed in, you can get closer to your subject than ever before, and backgrounds begin to take on a feeling of scale and importance. Parallax type movements gain a very cool cinematic feel. You can get quite an intimate shot of a subject without them even realizing there's a drone nearby, and when it's time to put a subject or two in the shot and arrange them nicely against a background, a zoom lens gives you lots more options. From the same spot, here's wide:

    And of course, it enables the new "dolly zoom" automated shot mode, which you're going to be seeing absolutely everywhere from now on. Select a subject on the screen by dragging a box around it, and the Mavic 2 Zoom will hurtle backwards while slowly zooming in (with a combination of optical and digital zoom) to keep that subject the same size while wildly compressing the background.

    It looks absolutely stunning, if your stomach can handle it, and it's a terrific demonstration of the power of perspective and exactly why you'd want a zoom lens on a drone to begin with. You can achieve a similar effect on the Pro, or any other fixed lens drone for that matter, but you need to do it in your video editing software using digital zoom, which simply doesn't change perspective like optics can.

    The Zoom camera also stays impressively stable during movement and in high winds. I was worried it would be harder to hold a subject steady while zoomed in – but nope, it's terrific. In fact, perhaps the worst thing about the Zoom is that now I want something with a 5x zoom. Or a 10x zoom, you know, to really hone in on a subject from distance. That'll be incredible. Everyone's going to need to close their bathroom windows when those hit the market, and Cineflex might as well throw in the towel.
    The Mavic 2 Pro

    On the other end of the scale is the Mavic 2 Pro, which doesn't have a zoom lens at all. Instead, it's got a fixed 28 mm lens connected to a camera DJI has developed in conjunction with Hasselblad, in which it owns a sizeable stake.

    This camera uses a full 1-inch sensor (as opposed to the 1/2.3" one on the Pro) and an aperture that's adjustable from f/2.8 to f/11, and makes use of Hasselblad's Natural Color Solution algorithms in its image processing.

    While the Zoom might be more fun to shoot with, the quality of vision coming out of the Pro is a clear cut ahead. As well as additional resolution (20 megapixels vs 12 megapixels for still shooting), the Hasselblad camera also offers significantly better performance as the ISO levels move up in lower light.

    Then there's crispness and contrast, dynamic range, sharpness, color reproduction and metering... it's no contest. The images coming out of the Pro camera are flat out nicer to look at, even if you throw the RAWs from the Zoom into Lightroom and try to spruce them up and give them a similar feel. It's not that the Zoom takes terrible photos, in fact they're on a par if not better than previous Mavic stills. But next to the Pro there's no discussion – it takes a few minutes of adjustments to get the Zoom's shots to feel close to what comes straight out of the Pro.

    The additional sharpness, lack of distortion, color contrast and general feeling of high quality extend to video footage as well, but it feels like less of an advantage here. If you're going to go and shoot Cinestyle-type flat footage and put everything through color grading, then sure, you're the kind of person who's likely to get more out of the Pro. If you're posting footage to YouTube or Facebook, frankly I think it'll be hard to spot the difference, and the Zoom is the clear winner just for its extra utility.
    Which one should you get?

    If photography is your key goal, go for the Mavic 2 Pro. You'll appreciate a camera that takes better shots straight out of the box, in a wider range of lighting conditions, and gives you RAWs with even greater post-processing capability. There really is no contest.

    If you're mainly into video, the Zoom is an absolute revelation to work with and will get you shots the Pro just can't. Once you start shooting zoomed in, you'll find it difficult to stop. It feels amazing.

    But if you're really going for super high quality video, to the degree that you want to post-process it and color correct for maximum cinematic impact, the Pro will get you a sharper image with better color and contrast, that grades better and will let you move to a higher level of slickness in post.

    So what we really need next, DJI, if it's not too much to ask, is a Mavic 3 Zoom Pro, with a 10x optical zoom, a 1-inch sensor and all the Hasselblad goodies. Choosing between these two is going to cause people to tear their hair out, to the point where DJI might actually lose sales overall. And that'd be sad, because these are two of the best camera drones we've ever flown, and their tiny form factor and ultra-portability make them super usable.

    The Mavic 2 Pro is on sale now at US$1,449 / AU$2,299. The Mavic 2 Zoom goes for US$1,249 / AU$1,999. And this time, the importers tell me, there's gonna be plenty of stock instead of the long wait times some people experienced for the original Mavic.

  • DJI Mavic 2 Zoom vs. 2 Pro vs. Mavic Pro vs. Pro Platinum vs. Air

    Although DJI's original Mavic drone is two years old now, it's still hovering at the top of its class. But not content to rest on its laurels, DJI has now launched the Mavic 2 series, which extends that lead by equipping a 2x optical zoom onto the Mavic 2 Zoom, and teaming up with Hasselblad to kit out the Mavic 2 Pro with a 20-megapixel, 1-in CMOS sensor. So how much of an improvement are they over the old drones? New Atlas compares the specs and features of the new Mavic 2 Zoom and Pro, as well as the older Mavic Pro, Pro Platinum and Air.

    Measuring 354 mm (13.9 in) diagonally, the two new models are a bit bigger than the earlier generation. the Mavic Air is still the baby of the group, with a span of just 213 mm (8.4 in).

    The takeoff weight for the new drones is approaching a kilogram. All that extra gear means the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom are quite a bit heavier than the original Pro and Pro Platinum, and more than twice the weight of Mavic Air.

    The battery capacity of the Mavic 2 lineup has had a marginal increase of 20 mAh, which would be nigh-on impossible for the average schmoe to tell the difference. Meanwhile, the Mavic Air has the smallest battery of the bunch, as reflected in its flight time.

    That small battery increase – as well as a reported 19 percent decrease in body drag – lets the Mavic 2 drones stay aloft for up to 31 minutes. That's one whole minute more than the Pro Platinum, four minutes over the Pro and a solid 10 minutes over the Air.

    A little side note here: the props on the Pro Platinum and the two new Mavic 2s have been redesigned to be much quieter in the air than their predecessors.

    You can fly the Mavic 2 drones up to 8 km (5 mi) away from you before the connection is lost, which is 1 km (0.7 mi) further than the Pro and Pro Platinum and twice the distance of the Air. That's thanks to the new OcuSync 2.0 wireless transmission tech, which DJI says allows for a full HD video livestream from that distance, with a latency of just 120 ms.

    The drag decrease that boosts flight time is also responsible for a faster top speed in the Mavic 2 Zoom and Pro. Both drones can clock in at 44.7 mph (72 km/h) in Sport mode, just pipping the zippy Mavic Air.

    Obstacle detection is pretty damn important, and the Mavic Pro and Pro Platinum have sensors to avoid running into stuff in front of and below them. The Mavic Air added sensors in the back, for when the drone is moving in reverse. But the Mavic 2 series has gone above (literally) and beyond, with what DJI calls Omnidirectional sensors. These allow the new drones to detect obstacles in front and behind them, above and below them, and to their left and right. That should make it safer and easier to pull off some of the nifty flight modes and camera tricks.

    The cameras, understandably, are the main point of difference between the old and new generations of Mavics, as well as between the two new models.

    The key selling point of the Mavic 2 Zoom is, as its name suggests, the 2x optical zoom integrated into the camera. That opens up far more options for framing your subjects, and could let you get some fantastic tight shots of animals without spooking them.

    If still photography is your bag, the Mavic 2 Pro blows the rest out of the water thanks to the beastly Hasselblad camera it lugs around. Using a 1-inch CMOS sensor the 2 Pro can take 20-megapixel stills, and in a wider range of lighting conditions with an ISO range of up to 12,800.

    Of course, the cameras on the older models are nothing to sneeze at either, with about 12 megapixels and otherwise decent specs compared to other commercial drones.

    All five drones are capable of shooting 4K video, with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160, at 30 frames per second. The older models can also bump that up to what's known as Cinematic 4K (C4K), which stretches the image horizontally to 4,096 pixels at 24 frames per second.

    All five Mavics can shoot in slo-mo at 120 frames per second, but where the original Mavic Pro and Pro Platinum can only do so with a 720p resolution, the Air, 2 Zoom and 2 Pro crank it up to Full HD.

    All five drones can write to a MicroSD card with a capacity of up to 128 GB. The Mavic Air, Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro also carry 8 GB of internal memory, in case you get airborne before remembering you forgot to slot a card in.

    Most of the usual flight modes are carried across to the new models. Sport ditches the finesse and just focuses on fast flying, which is where the top speeds are hit, while TapFly lets you tap on the screen to tell the drone where to go. Waypoints lets users set up a path of points to follow, and then there's the usual settings like Course Lock and Home Lock to help keep you oriented.

    Gesture controls seem to be missing from the Mavic 2 lineup, but that's no big loss.

    DJI is making good use of the new toys on the Mavic 2s. The Zoom's headline act is the new Dolly Zoom mode, where the drone locks onto the subject then slowly flies backward while simultaneously zooming in. The mind-bending end result is that the subject stays where it is but the background warps closer, in a once-difficult-to-pull-off cinematic trick made famous by the likes of Hitchcock, Jaws … and um, Everybody Loves Raymond.

    The Zoom can also take what DJI calls Super Resolution photos, which are made up of nine zoomed-in shots stitched together to form one massive 48-megapixel panorama.

    Both Mavic 2s can also shoot a range of panoramas stretched horizontally, vertically, 180 degrees or into an entire sphere. Hyperlapse is a new mode where the aircraft shoot a series of still shots while following a set path, then automatically processes them into a timelapse video. Both new drones also have more advanced versions of ActiveTrack, the system that helps them follow moving subjects.

    And of course, there's the usual QuickShot modes like Circle, Boomerang, Point of Interest and Asteroid, which all focus on and orbit the subject in different ways.

    The original Mavic Pro is getting a little long in the tooth as it approaches its second birthday, while the Pro Platinum is almost one year old. The Mavic Air is a bit of a generational stopgap, having launched at the start of this year. And the Mavic 2 Zoom and Pro have just gone on sale in the last few weeks.

    It's no surprise that the brand new Mavic 2s are the priciest, with the Zoom starting at US$1,249 and the Pro from $1,449. For a more casual drone pilot or Instagrammer, the Mavic Air is a steal at $799, and you'll still get plenty of bang-for-buck with the original Pro and Pro Platinum.

  • The Pacific Drone Challenge | Can a Drone Fly Across the Pacific?


    Will 2018 be the year that an unmanned drone flies all the way across the Pacific Ocean? That’s the question the Pacific Drone Challenge seeks to answer. The new competition challenges pilots and scientists around the world to fly a UAV from Japan to the United States - the first of its kind. The requirements are simple: fly from Japan to the Silicon Valley in California on a nonstop, unfueled, and unmanned drone mission.

    The contest is open to participants around the world. There is no deadline; the winner will be the first team to successfully take off from Japan and land safely in Sunnyvale, California.
    No Fortune, But the Potential of Fame

    The Pacific Drone Challenge seems to post a “what if” question more than a formal competition at this time. The 4,500 distance extends well beyond the reach of current non-military drones, and the competition (as of yet) has no prize. While the Google Lunar X competition encouraging contenders to fly to the moon may seem more difficult a feat, it’s also backed by a $25 million grand prize and a $5 million prize for second place, as well other million-dollar prizes. So far the Pacific Drone Challenge is exclusively sponsored by competing teams, including Japanese tech company iRobotics and American aircraft company Sabrewing.

    The Pacific Drone Challenge’s website states that the teams and their sponsors are entering the event for historical reasons, not the promise of fortune, stating, “Just as Charles Lindbergh's flew from New York to Paris in 1927 to demonstrate airplanes could fly nonstop across the Atlantic, the Pacific Drone Challenge will demonstrate the capabilities of unmanned aircraft to fly in similar circumstances [including] weather [and] distance.”
    Technological Limitations

    Unlike Lindbergh, however, flying drones across an ocean presents its own unique challenges. There will be no pilot on board, and the flight is expected to take a non-military drone between 45 and 50 hours. The typical hobby drone has a battery that lasts just under half an hour, and the challenge calls for all flights to be “unrefueled and nonstop.”
    Endless Possible Applications

    Being able to fly a non-military drone 4,500 miles has its benefits if a contender successfully completes the mission. At a fraction of the size and weight of other aircrafts, drones are significantly cheaper to fly long distances.

    In the word of Vonnegut, “We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.” The competition opens a world of possibilities for tech in 2018, and we can’t wait to see what’s coming!

  • Facebook launches Aquila solar-powered drone for internet access

    Social media company plans to start testing the craft, which is intended to provide internet access to remote areas, within months

    Facebook has revealed its first full-scale drone, which it plans to use to provide internet access in remote parts of the world.

    Code-named “Aquila”, the solar-powered drone will be able to fly without landing for three months at a time, using a laser to beam data to a base station on the ground.

    The company plans to use a linked network of the drones to provide internet access to large rural areas. However, as with its Internet.org project, Facebook will not be dealing with customers directly, instead partnering with local ISPs to offer the services.

    Jay Parikh, Facebook’s vice-president of engineering, said: “Our mission is to connect everybody in the world. This is going to be a great opportunity for us to motivate the industry to move faster on this technology.”

    Facebook said it would test the aircraft, which has the wingspan of a Boeing 737, in the US later this year.

    Yael Maguire, the company’s engineering director of connectivity, said that the plane will operate between 60,000ft (18km) and 90,000ft (27km) – above the altitude of commercial airplanes – so it would not be affected by weather.

    It will climb to its maximum height during the day, before gliding slowly down to its lowest ebb at night, to conserve power when its solar panels are not receiving charge.

    Although Facebook does not immediately face policy or legal hurdles in testing its drone in the US, Maguire said, it was the first company to fly at such altitudes and had a team working with policymakers to help set guidelines.

    The drone, which was built in 14 months, was able to fly in the air for 90 days at a time, Maguire said. Lacking wheels, or even the ability to climb from ground level to its cruising altitude without aid, it will be launched with the help of helium balloons, which will rise it to its preferred height.

    The balloons will be easily capable of lifting the plane: even when fully laden with communications gear, it will weigh just 880lbs (400kg), less than a fifth of the recognisable Reaper drone used by the US military, even though the Aquila drone has a wingspan of 46 yards (42m), compared to the Reaper’s 16 yard (15m) breadth.

    Because the planes must constantly move to stay aloft they would circle a two-mile (3km) radius, Parikh said.

    The Aquila program, which was first tested in Britain in March this year, is geared towards bringing internet access to the 10% of the population who do not have it.

    It faces competition from a similar programme developed by Google to bring wireless internet to rural communities using high-altitude helium balloons. The programme, called “Project Loon”, involves fitting transmitters to the balloons, which will fly at similar altitudes to Facebook’s drones.

    Unlike the drones, the balloons cannot be directly steered, but Google claims that, with an accurate enough model of wind speeds and directions, it is possible to effectively direct the balloons simply by raising or lowering their altitude to ensure they blow in the desired direction. Project Loon was first tested in New Zealand in 2013.

    Separately, Facebook a year ago launched Internet.org, an initiative to provide access to the two-thirds of the world without a reliable connection. The project, which partners with local mobile carriers to offer free internet access on basic smartphones across Asia, Africa and Latin America.

    But Internet.org has also been criticised by activists in both the developed and developing world for only linking users to a walled-garden version of the internet. Internet.org customers can access, for free, selected services such as Facebook, Wikipedia, weather, job listings and government info. But they cannot access the open web through the same service.

    In May, Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world wide web, suggested that users “just say no” to services such as Internet.org.

    He told the Guardian: “In the particular case of somebody who’s offering … something which is branded internet, it’s not internet, then you just say no. No it isn’t free, no it isn’t in the public domain, there are other ways of reducing the price of internet connectivity and giving something … [only] giving people data connectivity to part of the network deliberately, I think is a step backwards.”

  • Feds investigate crash involving drone, Army helicopter that landed in N.J.

    NEW YORK  -- Federal transportation officials are investigating a crash last month between a civilian-operated drone and an Army helicopter that was in New York to provide security for the United Nations General Assembly.

    The drone collided with the Black Hawk helicopter east of Staten Island on Sept. 21.

    The helicopter sustained damage to its main rotor blade and a window but landed safely at Linden Airport in New Jersey. No Army personnel were injured.

    The National Transportation Safety Board announced Thursday that it is investigating the crash and has interviewed the drone operator. The Federal Aviation Administration is participating in the investigation.

    The helicopter was based at Fort Bragg, N.C. Officials there said after the crash that the Army would rethink its procedures for domestic missions over populated areas

  • This might be the first drone billboard


    ORLANDO, Fla. — Drivers may have noticed a first-of-its-kind sight hovering in the skies over Orlando this week, CBS Orlando station WKMG reported.

    It's called the Drobotron. A 360-degree LED video screen mounted on a drone displayed videos of the Parc Corniche Hotel, as well as advertisements promoting pizza and margaritas at the resort's restaurant.

    "Our patent revolves around a flying TV," Drobotron inventor Bobby Watts told the station. "The first time I saw it fly I thought, 'Wow, this is a game-changer.'"

    Watts, who has built and flown model aircraft for years, was inspired to create Drobotron by watching spectators' reactions to drones buzzing by.

    "No matter where I go and fly a drone, everyone looks up at it. We've even been to the Cape filming rockets, and people will turn around from the rocket and look at our drones," Watts said. "So I just figured, why not capitalize? Why not put your advertising, put your content on the drone itself?"

    Watts, who is licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration to fly drones commercially, attached a 40-by-10-inch video display to an unmanned aerial vehicle. Video clips, still photos, and text can be uploaded to Drobotron before the radio-controlled aircraft takes flight.

    To ensure safety, the 30-pound drone cannot be flown over people. But Drobotron's video screens can easily be seen as it flies a safe distance from crowds.

    "Even on a bright sunny Florida day, you can see the screen for hundreds of feet," Watts said.

    A promotional video for Drobotron shows the drone displaying the words "Grand Opening" over a new business and informing passersby that a home is "For Sale."

    The aerial billboard could have other uses, such as displaying emergency messages during search and rescue operations, participating in fireworks and theme park shows, or serving as a scoreboard during surfing competitions, according to Watts.

    His invention has already been used by a customer who wanted an extremely unique marriage proposal.

    "Luckily, she said 'yes,'" Watts said.

    Chris Demko, vice president of the Parc Corniche Hotel, hired Watts to fly advertisements for the resort.

    "It's going to catch everyone's attention, help them stop in to get a room for a night, or have a meal or [a] couple drinks at our restaurant," Demko said.

    Although Drobotron might bring to mind the ominous flying billboards featured in the 1982 science fiction movie "Blade Runner," Watts does not expect the skies to be cluttered with drone advertisements.

    "In no way do we think this will replace a banner plane or the guy twirling the sign," Watts said. "It's just another medium for advertisers to use."

    For $200 per hour, Watts's company will fly Drobotron over a customer's event or business. He has also begun taking preorders from licensed drone operators who are eager to purchase one of the $20,000 flying billboards.

    "This is our first aircraft. We're working on bigger ones and bigger ones," Watts said. "So this is only the beginning."
